1886-96 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' 5/- plate proof in carmine-pink on ungummed pink laid paper with the Value
Printed Three Times in the Tablet horizontal pair Imperforate Vertically Between, the right-hand unit Perf 11½-12½ on three sides, the left-hand unit imperforate at sides, characteristic minor bends & a few uneven perfs. Almost certainly a trial by
the printer, who had not previously used the keyplate process, to correctly align the duty plate. Ed Williams at page 8 states that "About ten copies are known to the writer, including one pair [possibly this item] and a strip of 3". A single
imperforate on both sides sold at our auction of 14.8.2004 for $1415. Dr Don Pearce's single - imperforate at right - sold at our auction of 6.12.2023 for $552 (Sale 254 Lot 3241). (Image1) (Image2)

1886-96 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 11½-12½ £5 brown SG 205, strong colour, exceptional centring and clean-cut perforations,
large-part gum with neat hinge remainder, Cat £6000. A rare stamp: most examples offered have had pen cancels removed. Ex William Frazer: sold at our auction of 7.2.2009 for $11,065. BPA Certificate (2003). Superior to the 'Besancon' (I) example -
off-centre and with irregulare perfs - that sold in 2017 for SFr6655.
The late Simon Dunkerley expressed the opinion that this is the best centred example he had seen of any of the high values in this series. Ed Williams identifies two printings: the first of only 600 stamps (of which about half were overprinted
'SPECIMEN'); & the second of unknown quantity but probably no larger. (Image1) (Image2)

1904-11 QV De La Rue Tall Stamps Thick 'POSTAGE' Crown/SA Watermark 6d blue-green vertical gutter pair Imperforate Horizontally
Between ACSC S42ba (SG 284a), both units with minor marks on the face and ironed-out diagonal creases, some uneven/shortish perfs at right, lightly mounted, grossly under-catalogued at $1000 (£5000; ten times as much). The ACSC states that "One
vertical gutter pair imperforate at base of the upper stamp and at the top of the lower stamp [ie. two missing rows of perforations] is recorded. This pair, from the second printing, is somewhat damaged and discoloured". Gibbons describe SG 284a as
"Imperf. between (vert pair)", which we take to mean between adjacent stamps, not stamps across a gutter. However, the ACSC does not list such an error for this issue (only for the Crown/A Wmk issue that follows), so we take the Gibbons listing to
refer to this item. Absent from the Gary Diffen, Dr Don Pearce & Harry Lower collections, and possibly unique. (Image1) (Image2)
