1919-20 England-Australia Ross & Keith Smith Flight (Nov 12) intermediate from India with a very fine example of the Ross Smith
vignette applied on arrival, both the vignette and Indian ½a & 1a tied by two of three very fine to superb strikes of the double-oval 'FIRST AERIAL MAIL/RECEIVED/26FEB1920/GREAT BRITAIN TO AUSTRALIA' datestamp, faint three-line 'PER/VICKERS VIMY
AEROPLANE/TO AUSTRALIA' cachet in blue and with bold autograph of "Keith Smith", minor blemishes mostly on the reverse, AAMC 12a, Cat "from $5750".
Tom Frommer in 'The Ross Smith Stamp & Its Postal History' records only 14 of the 364 covers carried as having originated at Calcutta. This cover is Frommer #220, addressed to "Mrs McPherson/11 Epsom Rd/Ascot Vale" and illustrated by him at page 64.
Frommer also notes that fewer than half of the flown covers bear the Vimy cachet and that only 23 were signed by Keith Smith. Our check reveals that only one other cover from India bore Indian stamps and only one other was signed. This is therefore
the only cover with both Indian stamps and a pilot's signature. (Image1) (Image2)
