carriages on the street, to Dunedin, New Zealand posted on board ship with Baby Banknotes Washington 2c red x6 tied by New Zealand 'N-Z/MARINE P.O.' framed cds cancels, Dunedin '8 DE 91' Squared Circle arrival cancels on the face where re-directed to
Christchurch, carried there by Travelling Post Office with 'N-Z/RPO-C' transit backstamp, a few minor blemishes. The rate was 12c per ½oz pre-UPU treaty rate (New Zealand did not join the UPU until 1.10.1907). Carried by Oceanic Steamship Co
'Alameda' departing San Francisco 12.1.1891 arriving Auckalnd 3.12.1891; the Oceanic & Union Steamship Co of New Zealand operated this service in tandem, with New Zealand mail clerks on board the American ships. A very attractive combination of
'Mobile' Post Office markings, first on ship and then on train, and a very early usage of the Marine PO canceller. Ex John Barwis.
