144 c image1846 (Aug 30) tiny 'ladies' envelope used locally to "Bligh Street" with light strike of 'POST PAID/AT SYDNEY' boxed handstamp in red rated "2"[d] and light but very fine ' 1 /O CLOCK' handstamp alongside, large-part very fine '[crown]/GENERAL POST OFF[ICE]/SYDNEY' backstamp a couple of very minor blemishes . A Two Penny Post was established in Sydney in 1831. From 1.1.1850 the rate was reduced to 1d per ½oz up to 1oz and 2d per 1oz thereafter. After -.7.1839, time markings were used only on local Sydney letters, the '1 o'clock' indicating that the item was posted before the afternoon delivery and would be delivered later that day. One of the smallest Australian entires we have seen, and the earliest such item we know about. (Image1)

Rare internal mail between country towns & an attractive 'Number One' cover. Sold at our auction of 19.10.2007 for $4890 (Sale 131 Lot 422). Cowra PO 1.1.1850. Carcoar PO 1.1.1843. Hartley PO renamed from Hassan's Walls 1.1.1841. Ben Palmer's Census 1851/194. The datestamps have both been thought to be of 1851.
