POSTAL HISTORY: (Aug 15) airmail to Tatts, Melbourne with Australia 7d Flying Doctor tied by largely fine complete 'NORFOLK
ISLAND/AUST' cds, then Norfolk Island Pictorials '7d' Surcharge affixed partly over the first cancel and tied by another untidy strike, minor edge faults & light bends. Apparently the Australian stamp was initially accepted, but it was then realised
that this was not valid for use from the island, and the Norfolk Island adhesive was added. In these circumstances, a blue pencil line is usually drawn around the invalid stamp to show that it has not paid postage, but this has not been done. A most
unusual combination franking. (Image1) (Image2)

1901-05 British New Guinea Rosettes Watermark Vertical Medium to Thick Paper Comb Perf 14 2½d black & ultramarine as SG 12 but Comb
Perforation (not listed separately in Gibbons), light aging, small hinge remainder. Gibbons state simply that the Watermark Vertical Medium to Thick Paper issues are found "line or comb perf". Hamilton Croaker lists only the ½d 1d 2d & 2½d occurring
with Comb Perforation, and states of the 2½d that "I have only seen this stamp overprinted either large or small Papua". (Image1) (Image2)

1901-05 British New Guinea Rosettes Watermark Vertical Thin Paper Comb Perf 14 4d black & sepia SG 13b, central 'PORT
MORESBY/1-AUG08/PAPUA' cds cancel, Cat £1300. The Thin Paper 4d 6d 1/- & 2/6d were made available only to the Queensland Agent-General in London. A few used examples are recorded, presumably having been sent to Port Moresby with requests for per
favour cancellations. The date on this stamp is the day before that on Tim Rybak's example which sold in 2008 for $1323. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “contemporary cancel ... only around 270 sold without the Papua overprint, and extremely
rare in used condition”. (Image1)

1901-05 British New Guinea Rosettes Watermark Vertical Thick Paper Line Perf 14 2/6d black & brown SG 16 with Watermark Cross
between Rosettes, central Port Moresby '-3DE06' unframed cds cancel, a couple of minor marks & a very small thin at right, Cat £4000+ for normal. Quite likely the only known example of this rare stamp with a 'Watermark Cross'. See Croaker at page
17-18 for an explanation of the rarity of the 'Watermark Cross' used to signify the centre of the Papermarker's sheet (each of which were cut into six printing sheets), and of which he had seen only a handful of examples all on the Watermark Vertical
Thin Paper 2d. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2025) states “very rare stamp & the only recorded example with this watermark combination”.
