1854-55 Swans Lithographs Imperforate 4d blue SG 3a large-part sheet of 100 (10x10) comprising Positions [51-60/231-240] being Row
3 [11-20] to Row 12 [11-20], including the following catalogued varieties: 'T' of 'POSTAGE' Shaved to a Point at the Foot SG 3d [Row7/15] and [R7/20]; Tilted Border & Evil Eye on 'F' of 'FOUR' SG 3i [Row 7/14] and [R7/19]; 'ESTERN' Squeezed-Down &
'U' of 'FOUR' Squeezed-Up SG 3k [R3/17]; Small 'S' in 'POSTAGE' SG 3L [R4/17]; 'N' of 'PENCE' Tilted to Right with Thin First Downstroke SG 3n [R6/16]; "Splashing Swan" (Water above 'ENC' of 'PENCE' Damaged) SG 3o [R6/20], affected by a closed tear
that was not mentioned in the Vestey catalogue; 'F' of 'FOUR' Slanting to Left SG 3p [R7/17]; Squeezed-Down 'WESTERN' in Tiny Letters SG 3q [R8/17]; 'P' of 'PENCE' with Small Head SG 3r [R9/15]; Squeezed-Down 'RALIA' SG 3s [R9/16]; 'PE' of 'PENCE'
Close Together SG 3t [R10/15]; Narrow 'N' of 'PENCE' SG 3u [R10/16]; 'POS7AGE' SG 3v [R11/15]; Thin Right Downstroke of 'A' of 'POSTAGE' SG 3w [R11/16]; and No Line above 'GE' of 'POSTAGE' & Line below 'FOU' of 'FOUR' SG 3y [R8/11]. In addition,
there are two other major varieties - why are they not given a catalogue listing? - Swan with White Eye [R8/15] and 'WESLERN' ('T' & 'E' Joined) [R12/18]; one right-hand unit with a repaired tear into the design and a few very minor imperfections
that are quite inconsequential, unused, Cat £90,000++ (as singles). Ex H Horsley (1912), PR England (1926), David Bernhard (1928), SA Brown (1946), Lord Samuel Vestey (2015) and Trevor Hiscock: sold for $128,100 (Sale 215 Lot 119). Only 12
Gibbons-listed varieties are noted in the Vestey catalogue: Lord Vestey did not note the presence of the two Tilted Border units, and the Line below 'FOU' was noted only as a substituted transfer and not also as SG 3y.
This impressive large-part sheet is, without any doubt, one of the Crown Jewels of Australian philately, and one of the most stimulating and technically exciting philatelic items from anywhere in the world. In addition to the presence of so many
major varieties, it is evidence of the laborious nature of laying-down the individual transfers on the printing stone, resulting in inevitable uneven spacing between the clichés, most notable on the last four columns of the last four rows where the
horizontal laying-down has become significantly out of alignment. Further, two of the four positions previously occupied by the Inverted Frame are present. These are [R8/11], the Line below 'FOU' of 'FOUR' and [R8/16] with Bulging Frame above 'AG' &
Close above 'E' of 'POSTAGE'. For a detailed examination of the varieties, and the relationships between them - which are impossible to observe from single stamps - we refer you to Brian Pope's fascinating study 'The 4d Lithograph 1857-1864'
(1984). (Image1)

1854-55 Swans Lithographs Imperforate 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, margins close to good, Cat £3250. Superb. Ex Dr Cecil Walkley: sold
for $2560 (Sale 115 Lot 217). It is noteworthy that Dr Walkley had only one unused example of this shade, compared with three of the more highly regarded 'slate-blue'. This supports our contention that the 'deep dull blue' is the scarcer shade. It
should also be noted that 'deep dull blue' was the shade of the First Printing, so it should be listed by Gibbons as SG 3. (Image1) (Image2)
