1896 (Aug) Dongola Campaign officer's cover to London with 'WADI-HALFA/ CAMP /...' cds & doubled 'T'-in-box handstamp, Cairo
transit & 'LONDON/30SP/96' backstamps, superb strike of '2½D/F.B.' handstamp, part of the flap missing & the two panels separated & rejoined. With two 4pp 8vo letters - one headed "Dulgo 13th Aug 96" - & signed "FG Anley" or "Gore Anley" [Captain
(later Major-General) Frederick Gore Anley] who states this will be his "last letter before we reach Dongola...For the next 3 weeks I expect we will be marching & fighting without rest every day...I always think men do better if they know exactly
what they are required to do...". He speaks of harsh weather causing 1500 men being helped on baggage camels & that 12 died. "We really have not enough transport...the country is so frightfully mountainous that the camels have to go single file...no
newspaper correspondents have been allowed...one or two chaps have been allowed to write letters to the papers..." Dulgo was a small military post on the railway line from Egypt. It had no post office.
