1898 (Aug 10) usage of Postal Card Numeral 1½d blue to Germany with lengthy personal message in German from a son to his mother,
endorsed "Per SS Polynesian" and posted in the GPO late fee box with QV 2½d purple added tied by Sydney duplex cancel and 'LATE FEE PAID/G.P.O' cachet on the face, 'LUNEBURG/11.9.98' arrival datestamp alongside on the face, light transmission & aging
marks. Postcards with the late fee paid are very scarce, a correctly uprated Postal Card even more so. While the late fee charge for mail addressed within Australia was 1d, that for overseas countries varied with the destination and where it was
posted: for non-Pacific destinations posted in the GPO late fee box, the charge was 2½d per article. (Image1) (Image2)

1899 (March 3) use of 3d Registration Envelope to Sydney with Jubilee 2d tied by superb strike of the rare provisional
straight-line 'BROOKONG.' handstamp in violet, 'LOCKHART' & 'THE ROCK' transit backstamps. PO opened 1/2/1899; closed 13/11/1915. Apparently no postmarkers were issued for at least a month. Sold at our auction of 19.10.2007 for $728 (Sale 224 Lot

1906 (July 5) PPC to Cyprus with QV 2d blue tied by light BN '1606' of 'ANNANDALE' (cds alongside) and endorsed "T5" in blue,
transits of 'SUEZ', 'LIMASSOL/AU9/06/CYPRUS', partial '[LARN]ACA' cds and 'NICOSIA/AU10/06/CYPRUS' arrival cds presumably where the '1CP' (= Copper Piastre) handstamp was applied. An enigma: the postcard rate was 1½d and the admonition at upper-left
was incorrect, so the item was actually overpaid. (Image1) (Image2)

1907 commercial envelope-front to a Sydney suburb with fine strikes of the boxed 'BRITISH/ SOLOMON/ISLANDS/PAID' handstamp &
'TULAGI/FE11/1907/BRITISH SOLOMON IDS' cds, at Sydney assessed as a double-rate letter with QV 2d pair affixed & tied by cds of FE25/07, minor blemishes & overall aging. Don Franks' Checklist #55. Ex Stan Jersey. This is the only double-rate item and
- with two pieces of the same date - the latest recorded pre-stamp item from the Solomons. The Large Canoes were issued three days later, on 14.2.1907. (Image1) (Image2)

Checklist #65 (March; minor blemishes), #85 (July; very fine) & #92 (August; tonespots). Combination frankings were no longer required after 3.9.1907, on which date the Solomons was admitted to membership of the Universal Postal Union (UPU).

1907 social envelope to County Durham with QV 2d ultramarine tied by largely very fine 'NEW HEBRIDES/10AP/1907/VILA' cds, light
but obvious 'DARLINGTON/MY28/07' arrival backstamps, light horizontal & vertical folds. Ex 'Santo': sold at our auction of 24.6.2000 for $2800 (Sale 82 Lot 1017). RPSL Certificate (1987). An important postal history item: this is probably the
earliest (and only?) 2d-rate cover from the NSW Agency period. The 2d letter rate (and 1d postcard rate) was approved 4.7.1905 but not implemented until -.03.1907. New Hebrides is not in Richard Breckon's Australian Postal Rates Guide list of Empire
destinations to which the reciprocal 2d rate was applied, but this cover provides empirical evidence that it was included. (Image1) (Image2)

by 'R'-in-vertical-oval handstamp, fine 'KOTZSCHENBRODA/19.8.07' backstamp, minor blemishes. Don Franks Checklist #82. (Image1) (Image2)
