1859 New South Wales entire from "Police Goulburn/NSW 25th Aug 1859" to "The Detective Alexander/Beechworth Via/Albury" with
defective 6d Diadem & poor numeral cancel, the reverse with 21mm cds of 'GOULBURN', 'YASS' & 'ALBURY' and 'BEECHWORTH/AU29/59/VICTORIA' arrival, ironed-out filing folds. The letter relates to "... three horses ... supposed to be stolen ..." and in
the margin names the alleged offender as bushranger "Paddy Farrell/alias/McCarthy". Farrell arrived in NSW as a convict in 1837. On 24.5.1859, he and two others held-up the Beechworth-Melbourne mail coach, robbed the passengers & absconded with the
mail bags. After extracting valuables, the letters were burned. Farrell escaped to NSW but was caught & sentenced to ten years hard labour. See 'Mail Robberies by Bushrangers in Australia 1833-1908' by Brian Peace (2011). (Image1) (Image2)

1862 New South Wales large-part Post Office Way Bill for five registered letters from residents on the Forbes-Lachlan Goldfields
from 'YASS' with fine strike of the scarce 'LAMBING FLAT/OC13/1862/=NSW=' arrival cds, contemporary endorsement on the reverse "Recovered from/Murrumburrah/Mail Robbery", overall soiling & minor repairs still an historically important artefact. The
local mails were delivered on horseback. On 15.10.1862, mailman George Hunter alleged he had been held-up by two armed bushrangers who took his horses & the mailbags. The horses & desecrated mailbags were later recovered. Hunter was suspected &
charged but was acquitted. In -.2.1863, another suspect was charged but released for lack of evidence. See 'Mail Robberies by Bushrangers in Australia 1833-1908' by Brian Peace (2011) at pages 53-55, where both sides are illustrated. (Image1) (Image2)

1864 New South Wales partly-printed advice of receipt of £1/4/- with postscript: "The letter had been scattered with others at
Lapstone Hill but contents seem to have passed the notice of the knights of the road & was forwarded in very dilapidated condition but money safe/CH [?] Addison", filing folds & repaired central spikehole. At about 2:15am on 11.3.1864, the Western
Mail Coach was stopped by three bushrangers. A quantity of cash and gold & other valuables from the mail were stolen. See 'Mail Robberies by Bushrangers in Australia 1833-1908' by Brian Peace (2011) at pages 78-81, where illustrated. It isn't
mentioned that the coach-driver recovered what he could of the mail but, for this item to be dated the day of the hold-up, that must have been the case. (Image1)

1866 Queensland OHMS cover with 'Electric Telegraph Station' imprint at lower-left with mss "Taroom 11th Jany 1866" added, endorsed
"Vouchers", to Brisbane with Chalons 2d blue horizontal strip of 4 tied by three fair to very fine strikes of Barred Numeral '152' (rated RR) and 'TAROOM' backstamp, unceremoniously ripped-apart in the search for valuables and carefully reconsituted
for display, Post Office endorsements at left "recovered/from Robbed/mail/ Taroom/1866/RH Watt" in pencil & on the reverse "Recovered from robbed mail from Taroom 12th inst" in red ink. Retrieved from mails stolen and ransacked by the bona fide
bushranger Alexander McPherson on 12.1.1866 between Taroom & Condamine.
This is the only recorded postal article recovered from a bushranger incident from anywhere in Australia. Considering that Brian Peace has documented 430 bushranging incidents, this is quite extraordinary. Two Victorian covers of 1851 & 1856 were
long believed to be from bushranger incidents. However, it has been proven that, in both cases, the mailman & an accomplice conspired together and that no hold-up or violence was involved. In a twist of fate, this marvellous cover was discovered only
after Brian's Bushrangers book was published in 2011. (Image1) (Image2)

1900 South Australia cover to a member of the South Australian 2nd Mounted Rifles in South Africa, very fine 'Recovered from the
Mails/looted by the Boers on June 8' cachet, redirected to England with 'LONDON EC/AU1100/ A1 ' arrival backstamp, light overall soiling, with the enclosed note on Pirie Chambers letterhed signed "WJ Belt". Very attractive. Mail from the South
Australian Contingent is very scarce; incoming mail is rare. Brian Peace records only this one item from South Australia with the robbery cachet: sold at our auction of 14.8.2004 for $3024 (Sale 111 Lot 697).
Wiiliam James Belt was an Adelaide solicitor. Francis Walter Belt was his brother & law partner. He was also a member of the 1894 WA Horn Scientific Expedition into Central Australia. During WWI he was commissioned into the Royal Navy, serving in

1920 (April 10) cover to Ballarat East with KGV 1½d brown tied by Melbourne machine cancel, largely very fine to superb strikes
front & back of the very rare 'Opened by/Burglars/P.O. Ballarat' handstamp, ripped open at left with tears repaired with archival tape, light toning. Over 700 mail items were ransacked by thieves at the Ballarat PO over the weekend of 11-12.4.1920:
the culprits were never apprehended. Brian Peace states only two other examples are recorded. Kevin Nelson's example sold at our auction of 27.11.2010 for $5825 (Sale 160 Lot 1021) and again at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $4310 (Sale 242 Lot 1270).

1974 Great Britain commercial airmail cover to Western Australia with 10p Machin tied by Kensington '20NOV' slogan & very fine
strike of the Type A 2-line 'DELAYED EN ROUTE/AIRCRAFT HIJACKED' handstamp on the reverse (with a set-off on the face), minor blemishes. The first example we have offered: Brian Peace has recorded only ten covers with the Type A cachet, compared with
42 with the Type B cachet. On 21.11.1974, a British Airways plane en route to Singapore was hijacked at Dubai. 23 passengers - including Australian aboriginal activist Kath Walker - had stayed aboard & were taken as hostages to Libya. Demands for the
