RPSL Certificate (2007) mentions a "thin" which we cannot discern. Barwis & Moreton state at page 66 that "Deep red-brown ... is by far the rarest shade. Purves estimated that fewer than a dozen exist" including a pair on cover. John Barwis' defective pair was described as "the only recorded multiple of this exceptionally rare shade", but another - slightly cut-into at base - was sold at our auction of 22.5.2025 for $900 (Sale 256 Lot 846). Stanley Gibbons guarantee handstamp in violet on the reverse. Geoff Kellow states at page 92 that "Calvert ... used the serpentine rouletter ... to divide the sheets of 100 into upper and lower groups of 50" - stamps with the serpentine roulettes at top invariably stemming from the top row of the pane - and estimates that only around 7000 of the 160,000 stamps used for separation experiments were so treated.
