1521 c imageIRELAND: 1648 entire datelined "Dublin 18/of Aprill 1648", signed "Your faithfull/brother/John Ponsonby", and docketed "...letter of ye nessesty of G[rand] Army in Ireland", addressed "for the Honble Colonel/John Moon our [...] of the house of Comonse", and initialled "JPny", stained but wholly legible to someone who can decipher the idiosyncrasies of 17th century language & spelling (note that both his capital "I" & "J" are penned as "A"). From the period of the English Commonwealth, under Oliver Cromwell. John Ponsonby was from Cumbria. In 1647, he lead a Horse Regiment to Ireland to help suppress the Catholic Alliance with the defeated English Royalists. His service was rewarded with the grant of large land holdings. Overprint on 2a6p tied by Indian-pattern 'FPO/No 324/5DE15' cds & IEF Censor 7 cachet in red, very fine; 1915 & 1916 stampless Field Service covers to Bombay with fine or poor No 324 backstamps, some aging, censored by different officers; and 1925 cover to Aden with India ½a pair tied by light but obvious 'SHEIKH OTHMAN' cds, opened a bit roughly. [Sheikh Othman was the main water supply for Aden. The Turks captured it on 7.7.1915. It was re-taken by the British two weeks later & Army HQ established there]  (4) (Image1) (Image2)
