backstamp; 2) 1838 French entire to "Port Maurice" from Nice with merchant's cachet & 'NIZZA/11 DEC' datestamp, superb strike of the rare 'MENTON' transit backstamp & large-part '[PORT]O MAURIZIO/14 DIC' arrival backstamp; and 3) a similar 1840
entire without the Menton transit; minor blemishes. [At the time, Nice & Monaco were within the Kingdom of Sardinia, as was Genoa of which Porto Maurizio was part. Menton was a Grimaldi possession until 1815 when it became a Sardinian protectorate.
