Both the overprint colour & the variety are unlisted by Gibbons. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2015) states "very rare". [Only 10 sheets of 40 were overprinted in carmine. The variety occurred only once on each sheet so only ten examples can exist. Tim Rybak's example in a pair & Peter Troy's single sold for $1552 & $1610 respectively] (Image1)

956 c image1905 (Jan 6) usage of 'Austral Pearl' real photo PPC of Native Villagers & Huts and lengthy message headed "Sister's Home, Kiriwina, Jan 6th 1905" which explains that the image "was taken some years ago at Dobu by one of the Missionaries. I have not a view of the Kiriwinan houses yet", to Australia with BNG 1d with 'BNG'-in-bars cancel and slightly doubled 'SAMARAI/25JA05/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' cds alongside, one slightly bumped corner and a few minor aging marks. Kiriwina is the largest of the Trobriand Islands, 250km north of Samarai; the card was presumably carried there by the next Burns Philp steamer, which would explain the almost three weeks that elapsed between writing and posting. This may well be the earliest known item of mail from the Trobriand Islands. There was no Post Office on the islands until Losuia opened in 1926. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

957 c image1906 (April) humorous PPCs from Percy John Money to his daughter in NSW, each with BNG 1d, the earlier headed "Buna Bay" tied by 9-Bars 'B.N.G.' cancel of Samarai with message including "am going ... on an expedition to Mt Albert Edward with Mr Monckton", the later headed "Ioma" tied by a good strike of the rare 'TAMATA/B.N.G' cds (Lee #48A; rated E) with message including "We will be leaving here in a few days now to skip up that hill (1300-1400 feet)", each with very fine to superb 'SAMARAI/BRITISH NEW GUINEA' cds, minor aging/toning. Roger Lee states that postal facilities were transferred from the Tamata mining village to Ioma in mid-1905, the cds continuiing in use at the new office.  (2) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)

958 c image1934 (Feb 24) from passenger on board "SS Lurline/Matson Line" (return address) to Wisconsin endorsed "Via Air Mail" with rare commercial combination franking of Pictorials 3d Dandy and USA Winged Globe 8c olive both tied by 'PORT MORESBY' cds, the USA stamp also cancelled in transit by 'SAN FRANCISCO/APR 6/CALIF/1934' duplex, light vertical fold clear of the adhesives otherwise very fine. Roger Lee states that this is the only known non-philatelic example of such a combination franking from Papua. Between 1924 & 1937 a system for pre-paying US domestic airmail with either or both Australian or American stamps was introduced in Australia and its Territories. American dealers GH Pflum and AC Roessler created philatelic covers from both New Guinea & Papua.
