Australian convict cap circa 1803-1820 from Port Arthur, Tasmania, clearly marked inside with Broad arrow & "BO" (Board of
Ordnance). In 1819 when asked whether the leather caps were serviceable Major George Druitt (first superintendant of convicts at Hyde Park Barracks) replied "They are quite useless, and afford no protection to the head from the sun". Despite Druitt's
criticism the leather caps remained part of the convict uniform at least into the 1850s. Loved or hated, serviceable or useless, the eccentrically shaped leather cap is an evocative reminder of our convict past. Ex Allan Pease collection. (Image1) (Image2)
