Operation Bernhard Forgery £5 Peppiatt '1935 Oct 19 London', serial 'A/239 33203', usual deliberate pin holes and top-right corner
tear otherwise gEF.
'Operation Bernhard' was a plot by the Nazis during WWII to destabilise the British Pound by flooding England with forged notes. Printed in Sachsenhausen by Jewish prisoners, the notes passed inspection by the Bank of England in 1942 and were the
most dangerous forgeries seen by the bank to date. As the war was coming to an end a huge quantity of notes were hidden in 70 crates and thrown into Lake Toplitz in Austria. The hoard was recovered in 1959, the absence of folds indicate this note may
be one of the small number kept as souvenirs. (Image1) (Image2)
