2752 P image1931 General Gordon Statue Airmails progressive die proofs of the vignette & frame with blank value tablets in all-different colour combinations on ungummed 'SG' Watermark wove paper, mostly approximately 70x50mm with two or three cuts at the edges, and two smaller proofs without the cuts, four with printer's notations in the margins, a few very minor blemishes otherwise generally very fine to superb. Ex De La Rue Archives - not illustrated in Walton - and Colonel JR Danson. 2760 P image1938 Sans-Serif Surcharges '5 PIASTRES' Trial Surcharge on Perf 11½x12½ 2½pi, a couple of very minor defects, characteristic lightly tropicalised gum, lightly mounted, Cat £400, in a footnote below SG 77. BPA Certificate (2007). Fewer than ten, of which two are used, are believed to exist, suggesting the catalogue value is very conservative. 2765 V image1935 Death of General Gordon Jubilee 5m green to 50pi red-brown SG 59-67 complete tied by oval 'REGISTERED/ 1 /26-JA-35/KHARTOUM' datestamps to local oversize cover (270x192mm) with blue/white R label, a couple of short perfs & a vertical fold at right clear of the stamps, Cat £225 x2+ on cover. 2766 P image1940-41 Surcharges proofs for the overprints on ruled wove paper comprising '4½/PIASTRES' block of 4 endorsed "30" & "Proof" in blue, and 4½/Piastres' block of 6 (2x3, four units with faint pencilled notations of varieties). Very scarce. Superb. Ex Stanley Gibbons Retail: cost £300 in 2006. The overprints were done in Cairo so there were no proofs in the De La Rue Archives.  (2 blocks) (Image1)
