Postal History - Military Campaigns 1884-85
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
2599 c image1884 (Feb) seaman's cover endorsed "From M Sullivan Skilled Shipw[right]/HMS Euryalus Suakim" with blank space for countersigning, to his mother in England with 1881 2d pale rose SG 168 (Cat £300 on cover) tied by London Foreign Branch 'FB/2'-in-bars cancel, 'BIRMINGHAM/FE19/84' arrival backstamp, part of the flap removed & a small repair at upper-left. This cover was carried in a closed bag to Suez, then per SS 'Iberia' to Naples, overland to France or Belgium, then cross-Channel ferry. Only three such covers from the Suakin Campaign are recorded. Ex John Firebrace, Graham Cooper and Spink sale of 7.12.2006: sold for £661. Gerald Ellott's similar & slightly later cover sold at our auction of 16.12.2011 for $1552. In early-February 1884, HMS 'Euryalus' landed a Naval Brigade of 150 sailors and marines at Suakin. They marched inland to relieve Sinkat - which had already fallen, with all of the garrison killed - and Tokar. At El Teb they were confronted by a large Arab force, of whom some 1500 were killed by the British. Tokar was relieved on 30.2.1884. (Image1) (Image2)

On 14.2.1884, HMS 'Carysfort' landed a force of 332 sailors & marines at Suakin. Ex Gerald Ellott: sold at our auction of 16.12.2011 for $920. (Image1) (Image2)

2602 c image1884 (Nov 22) officer's letter to "Staff Surgeon Pollard/HMS Albatross/China Station" with 1884 'PARAS 20 PARAS' on 5pi blue-green SG 57 vertical pair tied by one of two light but obvious strikes of 'WADI-HALFA/...' cds, minor peripheral damage at the base, slightly truncated at the top & the flap removed. A remarkable origin/destination item. The sender's initials at lower-left are unclear but the last letter is probably a "P", possibly another "Pollard". Until 1898, 40 paras = 1 piastre. 2603 c image1884 cover with Canadian Small Queen 5c olive-grey just tied by light cancel & postmaster's (?) inverted endorsement "Neilsonville/27th Nov 84/Quebec" at upper-left, to "Dr H Neilson/Canadian Regimant/Wady Halfa/Egypt", the reverse with 'QUEBEC' duplex, London cds of DE8/84 & 'CAIRE/16DE84/ARRIVEE' cds, redirected to "Tangour/Hospital", south of Wadi Halfa, minor blemishes. A remarkable origin/destination item. Frank Campbell in 'Canada Post Offices 1755-1895' records Neilsonville PO as opening in 1884, which is consistent with use of a manuscript endorsement before handstamps were received. The town may well have been named after the addressee or his family. The 1888 'Post Office Guide' states that it was near Ste Foye. Peter Smith's taxed & redirected cover from Canada sold for SFr4560. The so-called "Nile Voyageurs" were 377 civilian boatmen recruited in Canada (!) at the request of General Lord Wolseley who had commanded the Red River Expedition of 1870 where such men had proved their worth. However, the flat-bottomed whalers used on the Nile were difficult to row against the current and required great effort to be carried up the several cataracts. The consequent lack of speed was one of the key factors that caused the forces to arrive at Khartoum two days after General Gordon had been killed. 16 of the boatmen lost their lives, six by drowning & 10 from disease. 2604 c image1884 (Dec) Burn Murdoch cover with colourless regimental embossing on the flap, to Kent with 1884 'PARAS 20 PARAS' on 5pi blue-green SG 57 vertical pair (rubbed) tied by one of two light but obvious strikes of '[star/crescent]/DONGOLA/...' cds with indistinct date, 'SEVENOAKS/JA19/85' arrival backstamp, minor soiling. Peter Smith's similar cover - without the letter - sold for SFr900. John Gibson states only four covers with the 'DONGOLA' cds have been recorded. With 4pp 8vo letter on matching notepaper headed "Dongola Dec 21st 84" that states "...We arrived here yesterday. I got one c[arto]n [?] letters from home...I have very few NCOs under me to share all the office work...We shall get to the Regt in four or five days...The whole of our march now is by the river bank until we get to Koti..." From a cache of about 25 covers mostly with the original enclosures that provide an eye-witness account from this important, if tragic, campaign. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)

2605 long cover image1884 (Dec 6) Burn Murdoch cover signed by him at upper-left, to Kent with 'PARAS 20 PARAS' on 5pi blue-green pair tied by two poor strikes of 'WADI-HALFA' cds but with an almost fine strike at left, 'T'-in-box handstamp applied in error and scored-through, 'ALEXANDRIE/13DE84' transit and 'SEVENOAKS/DE20/84' arrival backstamps, a few blemishes & opened a bit roughly at the back. With 4pp 8vo partly cross-written letter to his father headed "The Camp/Wada Halfa" [sic] requesting him not to spread his information "of course I do not include relations". He states "...the Nile boats are taking a terrible long time to get up the river..."
