DISPOSAL DEPOT/BELVEDERE' triple-ring oval datestamp in red and 'BELVEDERE CAMP/S.RHODESIA' double-ring cds (Proud D2) both on the face, redirected on arrival to the addressee at "RAAF 2ITS 23A, Bradfield Park" with Sydney '21 JAN/1941' machine cancel, minor edge bends. Belvedere Camp PO 1.10.1939; various temporary closures until finally closed 19.11.1944. Individual camp markings were replaced by the standard 'Rhodesian Air Training Group Official Free' cachets in late 1941. A rare book: advertised online for $1665. Henry Russell was a newspaper correspondent who spent many years in the region & was fluent in Arabic. Vienna-born Rudolf Carl von Slatin, had several periods in Sudan as both explorer and administrator & was appointed Governor of Darfur by General Gordon and converted to Islam, taking the name Abd al Qadir. 2566 c image1838 (1254 AH) entire lettersheet on laid paper with papermaker's watermark 'V G' (?) from Mustafa Agha, an Ottoman Turk at Suakin, to his brother at the Arsenal Market in Cairo, small personal seal at the base, beautifully written Ottoman Arabic script, folded in an unusual manner. No postal markings because there were no postal services in the Sudan at this time. Superb. This is the earliest recorded postal item from the Sudan. The Sudan Study Group website states "covers are known from the mid-1840s...they were privately carried & bore no postal markings". (Image1) (Image2) (Image3)

2567 c image1845 (1261 AH) entire letter in French headed "Soudan 2 Ramadan 1261" and signed "G Thibaut", to a merchant in "Alexandrie", remarkably fine, no postal markings. The letter refers to a shipment of ostrich feathers & gum Arabic. Known to be from the Kordofan District, some 300km west of Khartoum, where Thibault was usually based for six months each year. In 1838, George Thibaut was appointed French Consul in the Sudan & was based at Khartoum. He became a prominent merchant and was renowned for supplying elephants and giraffes to zoos in Britain and Europe. (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4)
