At 16 years of age he was charged with having stolen ducks with his older brother Henry and Thomas Horn. All three were condemned to seven years transportation. After some time in a prison hulk Lewis was transported to Van Diemen's Land with 209 other convicts on  the 'Emperor Alexander' in 1833 (his brother was transported to NSW). Whilst still serving his sentence he married Fanny Lloyd on April 18 1839, and soon after on June 3 1839 applied for a Ticket of Leave. Ten years later they had one child John Bartram, but Fanny died of asthma when he was just 5 months old. Lewis remarried to Ann Williams in Launceston in 1850 and had a further six children Martha, Elizabeth, Sarah, Rachael, Joseph & Robert. Lewis died on 19th December 1900.
