Promissory Notes & Bills of Exchange
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
3097 image1812 Garnham Blaxcell handwritten promissory note for £250 to Captain Joseph James on or before 24th September 1812; together with printed form of a notice of protest signed by Ellis Bent Judge Advocate of the Territory of New South Wales showing that Blaxcell had not paid by 16th August 1813, stains on right and left, gFine. Very rare. Garnham Blaxcell (1778-1817) arrived at Sydney in 1802 as acting purser on HMS Buffalo, he soon won favour with Governor Philip Gidley King who appointed him to several official positions, and granted him many hectares of land. Blaxcell took an active part in deposing William Bligh and was one of the committee that examined the governor's papers after his arrest. During the interregnum he was appointed a magistrate and became the sole auctioneer of the colony. Being more interested in commerce than farming he became one of Sydney's richest merchants, however grandiose schemes and over ambitious ventures led to his undoing. By 1817 his liabilities were said to be £6373, assets £5255, and had also defaulted to the government for £2385 in import duties. On 9th April 1817 Blaxcell secretly left for England in the Kangaroo stating his intention to recover money owed him, this was never (if even true) realised, for he died at Batavia on 3 October, his death hastened by drink. 3098 image1825 Van Diemens Land Commissariat Office Hobart Town, £150 Bill #191 on the English Treasury in sterling silver to Joseph Gellibrand for "Salary due to him as Attorney General", signed by Assistant Commissary General Affleck Moodie, and Lieutenant Governor (Sir) George Arthur. VF. Joseph Tice Gellibrand (1792-1837) appointed attorney-general of Van Dieman's Land, arriving in Hobart Town and sworn in May 7 1824. Gellibrand offended Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur by his independant stand and refusal to institute actions which he thought improper for the Crown to bring. Arthur mentioned his distrust of Gellibrand in dispatches to England and he eventually was found guilty of conduct not befitting his high office (complaints later found to be groundless). Gellibrand after continuing to practise as a barrister became editor of the Tasmanian in 1827. He later became involved in the Port Phillip Association and disappeared on an expedition with G.B.L. Hesse  to explore the hinterland of Port Philip in 1837, the mystery never being solved. Source: Australian Dictionary of Biography. (Image1) (Image2)
