Postal History
LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
2172 c image1940 1940 (Sept 17) airmail to Scotland "per Clipper Frisco" also endorsed "Posted Kotuku 16th Sept" with 'LOOSE LETTER' double-boxed handstamp in green at left (partly obscured by the censor label) and Centennial 3d & 6d plus Postal Fiscal Arms 6/- pink tied by 'OTIRA' cds, light central fold, a few edge faults & minor aging marks. Kotuku is located about 50km N of Otira, north of the Taramakau River and Lake Brunner. It appears that the item was carried outside the regular mails to Otira, possibly by boat across the river/lake. The remoteness of Kotuku may explain payment of the old higher 'via Hong Kong' rate rather than the 4/- per ½oz rate that was introduced with the commencement of the direct FAM-19 service in July 1940. 2178 PSE image1968 (April 6) two British aerogrammes (both burnt at the edges) to NZ, one with British 'SALVAGED FROM AIRCRAFT/ACCIDENT LONDON' handstamp in green, both enclosed in see-through 'ambulance' sleeves with 'OFFICIALLY SEALED - NEW ZEALAND POST OFFICE' red/yellow tape, the glassine and seals a little crinkled. On 8.4.1968, shortly after take-off from Heathrow, a BOAC flight literally lost one of its engines.
