NETHERLANDS INDIES - POSTAL HISTORY: 1940 (April 17) window-face merchant envelope registered with Batavia 25c red meter cancel and
red & black/white R label, 'MEESTER/18.4.40/CORNELIS' arrival cds where censored by the Orphan Chamber with 'Door Weeskamer-Batavia geopend ...' red/white label affixed on the face, returned to sender with 'BATAVIA-CENTRUM/14.5.40' cds backstamp.
Illustrated by Piet van Putten & Nico de Weijer in 'Postal Censorship and Internment Camp Mail in the Netherlands Indies 1940-1942' at page 24 where they state "Registered mail which had not yet been delivered when censorship began in May 1940, and
which was addressed to individuals deemed enemies, was given to the Weeskamer ... [which] examined the letter, and if there was no objection to delivering the letter, it would affix a label and send it on. Sometimes a letter would be returned to the

cds on the face. Carried by KNILM to Australia, TEAL to New Zealand, PanAm FAM-19 Pacific Clipper to San Francisco, domestic US airmail to New York, and PanAm FAM-14 Atlantic Clipper to Lisbon then road/rail to destination. Nice combination of

Sidney [sic], KNILM to Batavai" with Pictorials 20c pair & 50c tied by 'GEORGETOWN/ONT' duplex cancels, censored with 'K' &'15'-in-circle Thailand cachets & '.../CENSOR 71/SINGAPORE' handstamp in violet, and Batavia black/brown resealing tape tied by
'GECENSUREERD/3' handstamp in magenta, '23OCT1940' receival cachet on reverse, a couple of tiny blemishes. Although endorsed to fly on the newly-opened PanAm FAM-19 service to Auckland (NZ), TEAL to Australia and KNILM, the item was actually carried
by PanAm FAM-18 China Clipper to Hong Kong, Imperial Airways feeder service to Bangkok then to Singpore, and KNILM to Java. Most of these services were suspended after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941. (Image1) (Image2)
