1006 F imageV/Crown (W19) Watermark Perf 12 3d dull orange-yellow on Glazed Paper SG 143c, perforations just cuting the design at base, light but indistinct Barred Numeral Cancel, a few slightly uneven perfs, unpriced mint or used. Geoff Kellow states at page 160 that these were perforated both 12½ (comb) and 12 (single-line), adding "The latter is a very rare stamp". [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]

1007 G imageV/Crown (W19) Watermark Perf 12 4d rose as SG 144a but with Irregular Compound Perf, indistinct Barred Numeral cancel, undercatalogued at £400. The Gibbons listing is apparently based on Geoff Kellow's report at page 165 of a single used copy of "a stamp in rose ... [with] mixed perfs 13 and 12 ... perf 12 top and bottom, and 13 both sides, with an extra line of gauge 12 perfs at right to correct the off-centre line gauge 13", thereby creating an Irregular Compound Perf . We believe that this stamp (and the next lot) are related examples of such 'corrections'. In all cases, the Perf 12 machine has been used to correct misplaced Perf 13 separations, so these would be more appropriately be listed in the 'Perf 13' section. [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]

SG 144a". The original Perf 13 row at base (through the words of value) has been perforated again with a Perf 12 row immediately below. See also the previous lot. Ex Rodney Perry, Nick Holness - sold at our auction of 12.2.2010 for $718 - and 'Dubois' (I) sold for SFr390.

1010 G imageV/Crown (W19) Watermark Perf 12½ 4d dull rose red as SG 150 but an unlisted shade, two overlapping strikes of Castlemaine duplex of SE15/78, unpriced by Gibbons in the listed shade unused or used. Geoff Kellow records Perf 12½ only on the last two printings of the 4d (Sept 1880 & April-May 1881, both in "rosine"), stating at page 165 that the earlier 'dull rose-red' printings are found only Perf 13 or Perf 12. This stamp is from an earlier printing and clearly dated prior to the recorded introduction of two single-line Perf 12½ machines in 1879 and the conversion of two Perf 13 comb machines to Perf 12x12½ in 1880. (Gibbons list all these together as "Perf 12½"). [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]

However, Kellow does not record any Watermark Sideways examples. [Submitted to the RPSofV for expertising]

1016 F imageTH Saunders Paper Single-Lined Numerals Watermark 8d red-brown/pink Watermark '10' as SG 192c (Perf 13) but Compound Perf 13x12½, very well-centred, neat duplex cancel. An excellent example of the aberrant perforations produced by the late-1879 repair to one of the Perf 12¾ machines, which Geoff Kellow states at page 25 resulted in "short lengths gauging 13¼-13½ and 12¼-12½ ... resembling a compound use of two machines, which it is not". The exact gauges here are 12.75 top & base (as usual) & 12.3-12.4 at the sides (repaired state). This machine was converted to a 12½ comb-perforator in 1880, so these aberrant perfs were quite short-lived.
