1860-69 Second Roulettes 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow with the Surcharge Inverted at the Top SG 37a with Overprint Sub-Type 3
('T' of 'TEN' almost horizontal & 'N' of 'TEN' close to vertical), full rouletting and one of the few well centred examples, a little aged, 'G.P.O/NO10/69/ADELAIDE' cds largely clear of the surcharge, Cat £7500. Ex Dr Don Pearce. An attractive
example of this famous error of which 'Shilling Violet' No 16 (Sep 1989) recorded a mere 15 known (not including Peter Jaffé's unique pair). More attractive than Michael Blake's off-centre example - the surcharge misplaced & partly off the stamp -
that sold for $10,485.

large-part original gum, Cat £450. The Gibbons shade descriptors for the 1/- brown group are sometimes unhelpful: the predominant shade is red-brown.

1868-79 Perf 11½-12½ 9d bright mauve SG 76 block of 4, rounded corner at upper-right, GPO cds of MR28/74, a bit aged which doesn't
detract from this beautiful shade. A rare multiple: neither Michael Blake nor Don Pearce had a used block in this stamp. Grade B

1868-79 Large Star Perf 11½-12½ 9d bright mauve Printed on Both Sides SG 76a, the original impression on the 'reverse' is quite
faint & upright relative to the 'face', GPO cds of SP1-/7[3], Cat £900. Ex Dr Don Pearce. Usage at the GPO between September & November 1873, and at Port Adelaide between October & November 1873, coupled with the difference in the quality of the
original printings, indicates that at least two sheets were affected. The faint 'Adelaide' impressions are significantly scarcer than the more obvious 'Port Adelaide' inpressions. Peter Jaffé's similar GPO example sold for $860.

stamp. Superior to the 'Besancon' (III) example - rounded corner at upper-right & redistributed gum - that sold for SFr1570. [In 'Shilling Violet' of Dec 1991, Don Pearce wrote that "discolouration of the paper...is the norm" His example with
dessicated gum sold for $1375]

1868-79 Large Star Compound Perforations 1d deep green SG 101 block of 36 (9x4) mostly regular compound perf 11½-12½x10 but the 6th
and 9th vertical lines of perfs are Perf 11½ which has created 16 irregular compound perf units, the horizontal perforating quite misaligned at places, small repair at upper-left, a few trimmed perfs at the base & minor blemishes but generally very
fine with large-part original gum & about ten units unmounted, Cat £8100+, for unused singles. The largest recorded multiple and a spectacular exhibition piece. Ex Colonel Harry Napier (where it was mistakenly stated that the left-hand vertical perfs
were also 11½) and Ex Dr Don Pearce. Harry Lower's mint block of 4 - graded 'A/A-' - sold to Michael Blake for $2330, and then for $3145. Harry Lower's mint block of 30 (10x3) of the Rouletted 1d SG 21 - graded 'A/C'; Cat £5400+ - sold for $16,890.
[See the annotated illustration on our website: it is likely that the two irregular rows of Perf 11½-12½ were applied to correct otherwise 'imperforate-between' pairs]

'3-PENCE' on 4d issues. Ex Colonel Harry Napier, John Griffiths and Dr Don Pearce. Michael Blake's block of 4 sold for $4890.

1876-1900 Broad Star Perf 11½-12½ 9d rose-lilac Printed on Both Sides SG 123a, the original impression on the 'reverse' oriented
sideways relative to the 'face', 'PARCEL POST ADELAIDE/OC30/90/SA' cds, undercatalogued at £600. A rare & most unusual error, of which Gary Diffen recorded only three examples. Ex Julian Beresford and Dr Don Pearce. Gibbons now includes a footnote
stating "No 123a is known with the impression on the back either sideways or inverted". We suggest that the two varieties are fundamentally different and should be listed separately. We also note that all the other examples recorded by us have the
usual upright/inverted orientation.

1876-1900 Broad Star 9d rose-lilac SG 124 block of 16 (8x2) from the lower-left of the sheet with the enormous perforated sheet
margin at the base as a result of this value of smaller size being printed on paper intended for the earlier & larger denominations, Value/Sheet Number '2/- 1718' Inverted at the Base, some separation & hinge-reinforcing, minor blemishes & a small
hole in the margin at lower-left hardly detract from the impressive appearance, large-part original gum. An extraordinary block, of greater importance for being a Value/Sheet Number piece. A similar strip of only 3 stamps with the huge margin, and no
gum, sold at our auction of 12.6.2010 sold for $185.
