1854 (Apr 6) double-rate outer to "Hales Owen/.../Worcestershire" endorsed "Per Ship Lightning" with scarce solo franking of
Woodblocks Imperf 2/- blue-green/yellow SG 35 (very fine with margins close to large; Cat £250 x4+ on cover) just tied by light Barred Oval '30' cancel of 'CASTLEMAINE' (fine crowned-oval backstamp), Melbourne (AP7) & Liverpool (JU30) transits &
'BIRMINGHAM/JY1/1850' arrival cds in green, rated "2/-", very minor blemishes. A very attractive usage of what was at the time the highest denomination. [From 1.5.1854, and for only 14 months, the rate via Southampton - and presumably via Liverpool -
was 1/- per ½oz. On 1.7.1855, the rates were halved. Built in 1854, 'Lightning' was one of the last "extreme" clippers. Hales Owen is a market town 12km SW of Birmingham]

1859 (Jan ?) cover-front to the United States "via Marseilles" with extraordinary Rhapsody in Blue franking of Queen-on-Throne
Rouletted 6d deep blue x11 and Half-Lengths Perf 12 3d blue rare strip of 3 (the first unit defective) and 1/- Octagonal pale blue single & pair all cancelled with BN '1' of Melbourne, several stamps additionally cancelled by London transit of
MY--/59 in red or 'NEW YORK' arrival cds of MAY/30 (?), several of the stamps affected by creases including from being folded-over the edges of the envelope, and another stamp is missing from lower-left. Despite the faults, this is a remarkable item
paying by far the highest-recorded pre-1860 rate to the United States (9/3d). Ben Palmer records several pre-1860 items paid between 3/1d & 3/6d, plus an outlier at 6/- (#138).
Not recorded in Ben Palmer's Census. He gives the via Marseilles rate as 1/5d up to ¼oz, but 3/1d up to 1oz. If the rate can be extrapolated at 3/1d per ounce, then a 3oz letter would cost 9/3d. That's the rate paid here, but that does not allow for
the missing stamp.

1874 (Feb 25) OHMS envelope with 'GOVERNMENT BOTANIST' imprint at lower-left, very fine 'CHIEF SECRETARY/...' Frank handstamp in
dark red overstruck with Melbourne duplex, to "Sir Henry Barkly/Governor of South Africa" with London transit of 22AP74 & '1d' handstamp both in red, 'CAPE TOWN/MY20/74/CAPE COLONY' arrival cds on the face, minor blemishes. Ben Palmer's Census No 5
of only ten pre-UPU covers to CofGH. Illustrated in 'Franked!' by Stieg & Watson at page 23.
The letter is addressed in the hand of the eminent Government Botanist, Ferdinand von Mueller, who held the position from 1853, apparently until his death in 1896. In 1856, Sir Henry Barkly was appointed Governor of Victoria, receiving the highest
vice-regal salary in the entire British Empire! In 1863 he became Governor of Mauritius, and between 1870 & 1877 of the Cape of Good Hope.
