c image1856-60 Rait/Fulton Family correspondence mostly just the envelopes with 4d frankings, several Postmaster Manuscripts including three with "Brighton/[date]" & "12"-in-bars cancellations, one with "Franklin/[date]" & very fine BN '43' and one with "Bridgewater/8 2 58" on the stamp, also two 1d rate town letters and six from Scotland with various 6d adhesives tied by BN '28' of 'AYTON' (backstamps), and a few others, very mixed condition but most are presentable. Never before on the market. [John Rait was the Hobart City Surveyor for many years, and a former alderman. On 26.3.1863, he married Isabella Fulton, to whom many of the covers are addressed: see the next lot]  (23) (Image1) (Image2) (Image3) (Image4) (Image5) (Image6)

c/D image1863 envelope with Postmaster Manuscript "Franklin/4 1 63" at lower-left and Imperf 4d (damaged from being folded over the edges) with superb BN '43' cancel, to Isabella Fulton in Hobart. Ex Rait/Fulton Family Correspondence and never before on the market: see previous Lot. With the enclosed letter from John Rait accidentally mis-dated "Franklin/Jany 4th 1864", in which he gives details of walking from Hobart to the Franklin, with references to passing through Chick's, Stone Creek, and "Victoria as far as Musquito [sic] Point". The Huon Regatta was held on Port Cygnet on 1.1.1863 & Rait attended per the steamer 'Cobra'. He continues with a first-hand account of the grounding of the excessively overloaded boat and the transfer of most passengers to a barge, on which they continued. On arrival at Cygnet he learned more than 1250 people had come from "town" on the ''Colloden' [sic] & 'Monarch. "...they all had a very unpleasant as well as dangerous trip". The return trip, with the 'Cobra' & barge lashed together, "was even more unpleasant...it nearly frightened the wits out of the half on board [the barge]..." And then, at night, the ship's boiler was damaged and a fire had to be extinguished.  "...likely to be the last Huon Regatta that I will honour with my presence...it will not make it better by complaining now".

c image1901 cover to New Zealand with Pictorials 2d only punctured Small 'A' of George Adams (Tattersalls) tied by Hobart cds of AP2/1901 with chamfered-boxed registration cachet in blue at lower-left, double-circle 'REGISTERED/ No... /13AP01/AUCKLAND' transit backstamp & light but legible 'NZ/WAIHARARA/AP 15 01' cds (Wooders rated 7) on the face, peculiarly with an entire Tatts red/white label on the face. An enigma: why the label?; was it officially registered for containing coin?; why then was it not so endorsed or taxed?

The rate was 2½d per ½oz UPU letter; the 2d rate to the UK was not introduced until 1.4.1905.

c image1906 (Aug 27) to USA with Pictorials unauthorised but accepted 1d bisect & 2d tied by two largely very fine complete strikes of 'KING'S ISLAND/TASMANIA' cds, Launceston transit of 'AU29', carried via Canada with 'VANCOUVER/SP28/06/BC' duplex and Whitehall, New York backstamps where re-directed with West Hoboken (NY) arrival, minor edge faults hardly detract. The foreign letter rate was 2½d. This is clearly a non-philatelic cover, indicating a temporary shortage of ½d stamps on the island.

c image1913 (Jan 7) OHMS envelope to Hobart with Pictorials 'ONE PENNY' surcharge on Perf 12½ 2d violet punctured 'T' solo tied by slightly indistinct 'OATLANDS/TASMANIA' cds, a couple of minor blemishes. The 'ONE PENNY' surcharge was issued in late-October 1912 (around the same time as similar surcharges on Victorian & Western Australian 2d stamps) to provide additional supplies of this value after the introduction of the uniform Australian 1d letter rate, at a time when the introduction of Kangaroos on January of the following year was already planned. They are all scarce used in-period, all the more so with State Government perfins.
