3279 $E imagePOSTAL NOTES: 1886 (circa) original handpainted essay for the QV Design 1/- value in shades of blue with Chinese white highlights on tracing paper (213x114mm) with the central text printed in blue and without 'PAYABLE IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA ONLY' at the base, a couple of small pin-holes in the margins at lower-left and a few tiny bends hardly detract. Presumably executed by De La Rue from the design by Gwendoline Todd. It differs from the issued notes primarily in the shape of the Queen's head and the incomplete ornamentation around the three other corners and in the borders. Unique & beautiful.
