2001 c image1633 Scottish entire simply-addressed to "Esq [? French ?] George Woode", the letter difficult to decipher but dated "Musselburgh/11 July/1633" (or possibly "1603") & perhaps referring to a debt owed, the whole reversed & addressed to "The right honbl son &...belovit/brother in the Lord Mr Patrick/...Minist of Christs Eban/gell at Selkirk" with a further undecipherable letter, two scraps of musical notations in the margins and "In my defence/God me defend", extensive ironed-out creasing & the panels rejoined, one side with some heavy soiling still a presentable & intriguing relic.

2002 c image1658 (Christmas Eve) Scottish letter headed "St Ninians Decr 24 1658" listing members of the "prbzie [= "presbytery?] of Stirling", several of whom were intimitely involved in the trials that year of the twelve so-called Witches of Alloa, extensive ironed-out creasing & an internal repair. [St Ninian introduced Christianity to Scotland in the 5th century] From the 1560s, James VI (laterJames I of England) launched persecutions of witches. The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1597, resulted in some 400 prosecutions & more than 200 deaths. Much of the persecution was undertaken by the Calvinist (Presbyterian) Church of Scotland, that emerged in the 1560s. It is notable that the infamous Salem Witch Trials in America took place only in 1692-1693.

The letter refers to the Monmouth Rebellion: "...this rogueish rebellion allarunduss wch God grant be suddenly ruined...I purpose...to put my selfe in a posture to serve ye King, & repaire to my Ld Duke of Beaufort..." A rebellion against James II, a Catholic, lead by his illegitimate nephew James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, began 11.6.1685 & ended in defeat on 6.7.1685. A very fine copy of the 2pp 'Act to Attaint James Duke of Monmouth of High Treason' is included: he was beheaded on 15.7.1685. Edmund Warcup was a lawyer & magistrate, and an anti-Catholic zealot. The lot also includes a 1681 6pp anti-Papist tract (minor staining) '...The History of Popery' published by Langley Curtis towards the end of the fictitious conspiracy known as the Popish Plot.  (3 items)

[Sir Bouchier Wrey from North Devon was an MP & noted duellist who nearly died after a duel in 1694, lingering for another two years. Founded in 1583, Lyons Inn of Chancery was one of the smallest Inns. According to Wikipedia, "By the time it was dissolved in 1863, it was inhabited by only the worst lawyers"!]

[The addressee is probably the merchant John Aylward, a batch of whom early 18th century letters are held at Arundel Castle]
