1629 c imagePOSTAL HISTORY: 1940 (May 31) WR Carpenter & Co merchant envelope airmail to Japan with Undated Birds 1/- green solo tied by 'RABAUL' cds, censored locally with 'OPENED BY CENSOR' red/white label at left & 'Passed by Censor/T.N.G.  No.8' boxed handstamp on face, endorsed "via Australia" where 'AUSTRALIA - HONG KONG' jusq'ua handstamp applied on face, Japan circular censor mark in red on face & 'KOBE/[  ]/6.40/NIPPON' arrival backstamp, American Trading Company 'JUN 25 1940' receiving handstamp on face, a couple of tiny edge faults hardly detract. The Australian rate (which applied in New Guinea) was 1/- for the first ½oz for airmail all the way to Hong Kong and then ship to Japan (or 10d if only the Australia-England airmail service to Singapore was required). A most unusual destination & rate.
