1576 c image1842 solicitor's entire headed "Melbourne Oct 4th 1842" to "Thos Learmonth/Buninyong/near Geelong" & signed "FL Clay", rated "4" in black with largely very fine oval 'MELBOURNE/OC*4/1842/NEW.S.WALES' backstamp & poor Geelong arrival of OC*6 on the face, minor soiling. [The letter is a demand for a debt of £5/7/8d for legal fees. [Thomas Learmonth (Jnr) arrived in Port Phillip in April 1838, squatting on Boninyong & Borrombeet Stations, both between Geelong & Ballarat. He & his brothers were prominent in establishing the wool industry in Victoria. Frederick Lord Clay arrived at Melbourne in 1840 & was one of the first solicitors in the Colony. He entered a partnership with Horatio Nelson Carrington but it was dissolved in 1842. A mason, he also gave public lectures on music & was a strong supporter of the city's music life]
