FITZROY: 1899 Premiership Cap, blue with yellow piping, with wire-embroidered 'VFL/PREMIERS/1899',and maroon shield on brim, some wear
to inside lining & shield otherwise quite fine. An extremely early & rare VFL artefact. Ex Gary Fenton collection.
In 1897, Fitzroy was one of eight clubs to break-away from the Victorian Football Association, to form the Victorian Football League. One of the then powerhouse sides, the Maroons, won the flag in 1895 (VFA), 1898, 1899, 1904, 1905, 1913, 1916 &
1922. Rebranded The Gorillas in 1938, they also won the 1944 flag. As The Lions, between 1957 & the 'merger' with Brisbane in 1998, they did not add to their tally. (Image1) (Image2)
