British 'Franks/Signatures/Letters' large-format album with a collection of c.1800-1840 Free Frank signatuires on cover-fronts or
pieces affixed within of Lords & Members of the House of Commons some of whom went on to become Prime Minister including William Ewart Gladstone, Lord Salisbury, Lord Derby, Charles Grey & Lord Melbourne, the cover detached otherwise generally fine.
[Lords, Bishops & Members of the Commons were able to send & receive letters free of postage, the cost being borne by the Post Office. Outgoing envelopes had to be signed by the sender. These were avidly sought by autograph collectors. In 1840, as a
result of various abuses, Rowland Hill's Post Office Reforms brought an end to the free franking privilege] Lord Salisbury's autograph is shown above Lot 3083.
