TASMANIA 1828 (13th March) '#628 £100 Sterling cheque "Hobart Town, Van Diemen's Land, 13th March 1828" At Thirty Days Sight pay this
my Third of Exchange (First and Second not paid) to order of "Depty. Ass. Comm Gen Hull" ...'value received in One Hundred and Three Pounds British Silver Currency, on account of the Public Service..' endorsed at base manuscript "1st by Tranmere 28
June 1828'/'2nd by Calista 3rd July 1828" in red ink, reverse with several endorsements, remarkably fine.
The Hobart Courier 28 June 1828 carried a scathing article on the Van Dieman's Land Company which in part states: "We cannot allow the Tranmere to depart for the representatives of the Van Diemen's Land Company in London without an appeal. Let us not
be told that the public has nothing to do with them and their proceedings. The public has to do with them, and with everything they do and do not do in this colony, although we are ignorant of what is going on at Game Grim, as if the establishment
were at Cape Horn, or any other unknown part.....A latitude on the contrary was shewn the Van Diemen's Land Company, without their having the money in the island, on the faith of their united compact, that they would produce it, and they had an
immense tract of land assigned them on condition that they would expend £100 each upon it, of which £100 to this day no more than four solitary pounds (simply eighty shillings) have been expended....This we know from the London papers....A bridge
across the Derwent would do more to exhilarate and prosper the colony than any measure we know..." Source Trove. (Image1) (Image2)
