BOER WAR: 1899-1902 mail to or from Boer POWs on the Prison Ship HMS 'Penelope' at Simons Bay, the four inwards items variously
addressed, one outgoing identified from the censor cachets on the reverse & the other being headed "Simons Baai/Penelope 11 Dec 99", variable condition; also a contemporary photograph (150x104mm) of Boer prisoners endorsed on the reverse "Taken on
the Penelope/since gone to Ceylon", and Dutch PPC of Colonel Schiel who was wounded & held aboard the 'Penelope'. A very desirable group.

BOER WAR: 1900 mail from British POWs comprising 1) with 'PRETORIA/7FEB00/ZAR' cds & largely very fine strike of the 41mm
'[arms]/7FEB1900/COMMANDANT GENERAAL' cachet in purple, to London via Durban (backstamp); 2) to Devonshire with largely very fine strike of the oval 'WATERVAL KRYGSGEVANGENIS/25APR1900/COMMANDANT VAN DE WACHT' (= Waterval War Prison/Commander of the
Guard) datestamp in violet (LRD ?); and 3) large piece to India with fancy-boxed 'BRIEVEN CENSUUR/Waterval Krygsgevangenis' cachet in purple; a few faults but presentable. A rare trio. [It is believed that both cachets were in use for very short
periods. In early-June 1900, the POWs were moved from Waterval to Nooitgedacht] (3)

BOER WAR: 1900 Siege of Ladysmith patriotic PPC to Nottinghamshire with Natal 1d tied by double-ring 'LADYSMITH/MR6/1900/NATAL' cds,
endorsed by the writer on the face "GStatham/Capn Natal Carbineers/Ladysmith/6.3.19", superb 'NOTTINGHAM/AP2/00' arrival cds, central fold. The message states "British Supremacy for ever. We are rescued after 119 days of siege...a great trial to us
all...we were reduced to horse flesh which not at all bad as a substitute...the sick of course suffered severely...the greatest credit is due to this medical department..." The Siege was raised on 28.2.1900.

Catalonia 18.4.1900/[...?] de Durban", posted aboard the ship & taxed with superbe 'T'-in-circle & exceptionelle '5c' handstamps, remarkably fine. [The message states (translated) "...We are all on board the Catalonia...Health is passable, with
eating & exercise...correspondence from Johannesburg we sent via Lourenco Marques". He also mentions the loss of the SS 'Mexican' only two weeks earlier]

BOER WAR: 1900 (Jun 26) use of Transvaal 1d Postal Card to Zanzibar "via Delagoa Bay", from the German Consulate at Pretoria with very
fine 'MACHADODORP' cds, partial '.../LOURENCO MARQUES' transit cds of the next day & 'ZANZIBAR' arrival cds of 1JY/00. Consular mail was exempt from censorship, which is just as well or half the message would have been obliterated because of his
pro-Boer comments, the list of towns he had visited & the inference that he had been with President Kruger.
