1312 c image1901 Wrench 'Links of Empire' instalment cards Numbers 1-20 (ex #8) for the Royal Visit to Australia for the Opening of the First Federal Parliament, Numbers 1 to 4 cancelled in London MR30/01, Numbers 5 to 10 posted at the appropriate Australian ports of call, the last with printed 'Posted in Melbourne on the day of Opening of the Federal Parliament' but actually dated one day later, then Numbers 11 to 19 for the continuation from Australia via South Africa to Canada, all posted at the appropriate ports of call including 'ASCENSION/AU30/01' & 'ST JOHNS/OC25/01/NEWFD', and Number 20 of the Royal Yacht 'Ophir' & printed 'Home Again!', a few minor blemishes but fine to very fine. Sold at our auction of 27.2.2017 for $488.

[On 5.1.1909, the ship's pinnace, carrying 60 sailors in full marching kit & rifles slung over their shoulders, was run down by SS 'Dunmore' in Sydney Harbour. 15 sailors drowned & were buried at Rookwood Cemetery]

1316 cPSE imageQUEENSLAND: 1911-12 group comprising postcard backs x17 and makeshift postcards x20 all hand-illustrated in India ink & signed in various forms "SH Sheard", most featuring young stylish women or cartoons with very brief messages signed "Saville", the majority apparently posted in transparent envelopes but many are franked ½d only & probably didn't go through the mail, varying degrees of soiling/aging mostly from the acidic paper of the album in which they were originally stored. A unique group, including Lot 893. [Saville Hodge Sheard was a noted cover producer from the 1920s to the 1940s. In 1911, he would have been 30yo and a reasonably accomplished illustrator, although 'copyist' might be more accurate. In 1925 he was convicted of sending pornography through the post & fined £10!]
