Only 100 Specimen sets were prepared. Most surviving examples are ugly and/or defective. A set sold at our auction of 20.7.2022 for $1735. That & this set are both aesthetically superior to Bill McCredie's set that sold in 2011 for $2210]

772 O imageBEER DUTY: 1887 3d 'ONE GALLON', perfs trimmed-off, a couple of faults at the top & extensively stained, Elsmore Online Cat $800. This & the next 12 lots are the best selection of these dramatic & rare labels we have offered. Because of the regulation that they had to be defaced, most used examplest have significant faults, as described. However, they are so elusive, in any condition, that we believe it is prudent to offer them as singles, and establish what the market considers them to be worth. Our estimates reflect the condition, which is probably at least average for stamps that were supposed to be destroyed.
