626 PSE image1967 (Dec 8) usage of QEII Registration Envelope 2/5d red to Tatts, Melbourne uprated with QEII 2c green pre-decimal/decimal combination franking tied by Wollongong (NSW) cds and blue/white R label, light even aging. The 2/5d converted to 24c, so only a 1c stamp was required to pay the 5c letter rate (increased from 4c on 1.10.1967) plus 20c registration fee; the 1c rate increase presumably caused confusion. [Combination frankings on Registration Envelopes are scarce; Elsa Todd's 1/7d envelope to the USA uprated with Decimal stamps sold at our auction of 25.3.2021 for $1239]

629 c= imageUTOPIAN SETTLEMENTS IN PARAGUAY: 1899 social usage of Paraguyan 5c Envelope uprated with 5c & 'Provisorio/10' on 15c tied by three poor to fair strikes of the 25mm 'NUEVA AUSTRALIA/21ST--/PARAGUAY' cds, to Australia with 'ASCUNSION/20SE99/PARAGUAY' (a day earlier!) & 'SYDNEY/DE7/99/ 18 ' transit backstamps plus 'BROKEN HILL/DE10/1899/NSW' arrival backstamp, small hole on the face & overall minor soiling; also 4c x2 with part 'CORREOS/Col Cosme/...' h/s; also fiver covers to Canada comprising 1960 airmail and 1961 both with 'COLONIA NVA AUSTRALIA' cds in violet & the latter with '.../Colonia Nueva Londres' cachet also in violet, and 1961 x3 with 'CORREOS COLONIA COSME/...' cds with the Dateline Inverted, one of them with provisional R label endorsed "Colonia Cosme". A rare & desirable group., also with newspaper & magazine clippings. New Australia was founded in 1893 as a utopian socialist settlement of 238 people, lead by Henry Lane. It propunded an odd mix of communism, monogamy, teetolalism & white racial purity. Dissension lead to Lane & his followers abandoning the settlement & establishing a second called Colonia Cosmé. At its peak Colonia Cosmé had 191 inhabitants. By 1898 only 98 remained. The newspaper folded in 1904 and the socialist commune was abandoned soon after. However, the place names survived and, as evidenced by the later covers, there are still some 2000 descendants of the founders living in Paraguay.
