SUDAN: 1896 OHMS cover endorsed "Active Service no stamps procurable" & signed at L/L "WE Harper [?] pro OC/ASC/Germai", to a military
address in Hampshire with very fine bilingual 'WADI-HALFA CAMP/4SE96 TI/...' cds (Proud #D1; ERD) & boxed 'T' h/s (not recorded by Proud), British '1D/F.B.' tax h/s & 'ALDERSHOT/SE18/96' arrival b/s, small piece of the flap missing. [Ted Proud notes
that in 1885 only Suakin & Wadi Halfa Camp post offices were open. 10 more were open by 1891 but no markings have been recorded from any of them. British Forces had been roundly defeated in 1885. The Dongola Campaign of 1895-96 saw the British
re-capture most of the Sudan. Gemai was about 20km SW of Wadi Halfa]

Leakey who, with his wife Mary, and their son Richard Erskine Leakey were all famous anthropologists in Kenya]
