562 Selection (6) letters from papers of Joseph Selden, a Federal Judge in Arkansas 1820-24 who died in a duel; June 1820 document from Department of State, signed by Sec. John Quincy Adams, telling Selden the Senate has approved him as "Judge in and for the Territory of Arkansaw"; Oct 1821 letter to Selden in Little Rock, the newly established capital, from his wife Harriet back in Port of Arkansas, the former capital, hand delivered, and his response a few days later, also hand delivered; July 1824 letter from Department of State signed by JQA's assistant Daniel Brent, informing him that the Senate has approved him again as Judge of the District of Arkansas, however Selden was killed in a duel on May 26; Mar 1825 F/L from Selden's widow in "University" to her mother-in-law in Richmond, red "CHARle Va" cancel (lower case letters are in caps but raised) ms rate 12½; Nov 1825 F/L from ex-mother-in-law to now re-married Harriet Long in "University" w/ red RICHd cds and 12½ ms rate; corresp is generally readable, F-VF

563 A Revolutionary War era State of Pennsylvania promise to pay document dated April, 1777 at Philadelphia, payment of £10 to George Freind for "riding express to Lancaster County Cumberland and York, eight days @ 25/"; George transfers this debt "to the Bearer,"; then a third transfer in June, 1777 from Thomas Wharton Jr to David Rittenhouse Esq, both famous names in Philadelphia, Wharton was President of Pennsylvania since May & adds "Pres" after his signature, Rittenhouse was the future first Mint Director; reinforced folds long ago pressed flat, clear writing & signatures
