William Woods, an Englishman, was given a charter by King George I to strike coins for British colonies in Ireland and America, which gives rise to the term "Woods-Hibernia" often used to describe this series. Extensive wear prohibits determining the exact Sheldon variety (Chain Cents can be S1, S2, S3 or S4), but the chain is clearly visible, and the coin has very little corrosion. 7		1817 15 Stars N-16 F+ light verdigris on the rev. No credible explanation has ever been offered for why this one variety of 1817 (N16) was issued w/ 15 Stars encircling Liberty, as opposed to the customary 13 stars (which represent the original 13 colonies.) A fairly nice example of the popular and anomalous coin which often comes weakly struck. Typical of most N16s, it is struck slightly off-center. 12		1909-S Fine. Light brown color on a slightly wood-grained planchet. This is a common characteristic on 1909-S Indian Head Cents and often used to determine authenticity. With only a 309,000 mintage, this issue is far less often encountered than the hoarded 1909-S VDB (mintage 484,000), but it is less than half the price. Demand and popularity really do matter.
