Lot 233 - RARE The Pennsylvania Society gold medal, awarded (almost) annually since 1909; this example is from the family of the 1928 medallist William Williams Keen, Jr. (1837-1932), a well-known Civil War surgeon, physician and professor, the first brain surgeon in the United States and a president of the AMA, Philosophical Society and other organizations; diameter 70mm and weight 228.6 grams yielding 7.35 troy ounces gold; obverse has right bust of William Penn, designer's mark "JF Dec MCMIX" (.... In our Coin & Currency Sale #31, most series are reasonably well-represented but Seated Dimes, Barber Quarters, Bust & Seated Half Dollars, Trade Dollars, Morgan Dollars, and vintage US Gold deserve particular mention. A large number of British Coins 1600 – present grace the international section. And, among the numismatically-related items with historical significance is a gold medal awarded by The Pennsylvania Society to Civil War surgeon William W. Keen in 1928 containing over 7 troy ounces of .999 fine gold. 360 total lots – our largest to date!

The auction will begin at 4:30 PM ET on Thursday, October 12, 2023. Live online bidding will be available via Stamp Auction Network. Absentee bids may also be submitted via Stamp Auction Network, phone, email and fax.
