Black route agent cds ties 3¢ dull red (11A) on light buff cover to Syracuse, N.Y., accompanied by circa 1875 cover with "Cayuga Lake N.Y., Nov 5" cds on Union Springs N.Y. corner card cover bearing 3¢ green (158) to Ithaca N.Y.; latter with some wedge wear, a Very Fine pair.

Circa 1852 cover carried north to Cayuga for Syracuse on the combined railroad and steamboat service of Route 1368. Circa 1875 cover carried 32 miles south from Union
Springs to Ithaca on Route 1284. The Cayuga Lake cds is unrecorded but must have been used on the route, as no post office of this name existed in New York State.

4308     114-O-1 image(Express Mail Albany to Buffalo) U.S. Express Mail, Jul 4. Choice strike of red route agent cds and matching "Free" rating on folded letter datelined "Buffalo July 3d 1844" to Bern, N.Y., Very Fine and choice.
Towle No. 114-O-1; Estimate $300 - 400.

The Express Mail service from Albany to Buffalo encompassed a total of 8 different railroad route contracts. This letter was carrier east over seven of the railroads. In July 1842 the Expressman, William F. Harnden was contracted to supervise the carriage of the mails on the full route. He employed two agents to accompany the car the full distance.

Station cds just ties 3¢ rose (65) with bold fancy rectangle cancel on buff cover to Louisville, Ky. addressed to Lieut. in the "25th Regt. Michigan Vol." with original enclosure which states, "The new pistol will carry a larger cartridge, have tremendous power, are the most perfect pistol ever produced. There will be two styles, Full Plate & Plated France.", signed "T.W. Moore"; 3¢ tiny perf tear, F.-V.F., Rarity V.

A VERY RARE 2¢ BLACKJACK USAGE ALONG THE LONG ISLAND RAILROAD.

Cover addressed to Shelter Island located at the eastern end of Long Island. Convenience franked at 4 cents and carried on the line July 22nd circa 1865. If from New York the mail car left Hunters Point, Brooklyn at 8.00 a.m. to arrive at Greenport at 1.15 p.m. The 94 mile journey being run at an average speed of 18 mph.

Folded letter datelined "Holland Patent Sept. 11th 1839". Carried 91½ miles south to be put onto the car at Utica. Carried west 52 miles on Route 909 to Syracuse the 26 miles on Route 910 to Auburn. Buffalo at this date was not connected by railroad so a mail coach by road was used to that city.
