Clear fancy serrated oval T&C date stamp (SHA-3410) on 1874, 3¢ green registered entire to Shasta, uprated with overlapping 1873-75, 2¢ vermilion + 6¢ dull pink and 10¢ brown, five singles all tied by target handstamps; few small stamp flaws, otherwise Very Fine, a choice strike and remarkable domestic franking, the earliest Pinckney postmark.

382       image(Town & County) Port Tiburon, Marin Co. Cal., Jul 22, 1887 (Marin). Intensely bold cds and target duplex (MRN-3160, R5) on 1885, 2¢ Grant letter sheet to San Francisco; some light staining, a Superb strike, the only recorded example of the "Point Tiburon" postmark, ex-Polland.
Estimate; $250 - 350.

This was Tiburon's first handstamp postmark and the only one with the "Point" designation. It was an unofficial locative name used by the postmaster. No doubt the Post Office Department advised him that this was not allowed and by 1890, the device was still in use with "Point" removed.

384       image(Town & County) Quartsburg, Mariposa Co., Cal., Nov 26, 1851 (Mariposa). Manuscript postmark (MAR-1970) on buff cover to Bangor, Me., additional "10" rating at right; light edge wear and small central erosion hole, still Very Fine, the earliest known postmark from Quartsburg.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The Quartsburg post office officially opened on October 7, 1851 although it already was in operation during the middle of that year. This postmark from a little over a month after the official opening is the earliest by far, with Williams recording a February 1853 manuscript postmark as the earliest.
