New Zealand - 1873 Chalon Issue, Perf. 12½, Wmk. NZ & Lozenges
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
321 o    140 imageNew Zealand, 1873, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 1d brown, perf 12½. N Z watermark. Watermark inverted as usual, barred "C" in oval cancel, well centered amid typically tight margins, strong color and late impression - a characteristic of this late N Z watermark printing, Very Fine and choice, an exceptional example missing from even the most advanced collections, with 2011 Odenweller certificate. Scott No. 45. Campbell Paterson No. A1s.
SG No. 140; £8,000 ($11,040).

WITHOUT QUESTION ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THE 1873 1D BROWN PERF 12½ WITH "N Z" WATERMARK - A GREAT CHALON HEAD RARITY WITH ONLY A FEW KNOWN TO EXIST.

The 1d brown on NZ watermark paper is so elusive that this issue was not discovered until 1891. It's existence was doubted at the time however the plate wear on this issue could not be accounted for and would be nonexistent on the earlier printings (and in a different color). No unused examples are known and only two multiple are recorded - a rejoined pair and an intact pair on cover.
