John
Harleston was a Texas Ranger and Indian Fighter. He came back to S.C. and enlisted in Vigilant Rifles, serving on Morris Island. In June 1861 he became first officer on the Privateer "Savannah". It was shortly captured and he was imprisoned
in the Tombs, New York City, and tried as a pirate. Later he was exchanged, became a member of Charleston Light Dragoons, was captured again and spent the rest of the war in Prisons at Ft. Delaware and Hart's Island. (Image1) |
