1527       imageConfederacy, "Military Court, Charleston S.C. July 7. 1864". Dateline on blue enclosed letter with buff cover endorsed "O.B." for official business carried by courier to Asst. Surgeon E.S. Hart, 7th Regt. Georgia Cavalry, Georgetown S.C., letter reads "Doctor, I have the honour herewith to request that you would furnish me a description of the wound of which the late Major W.P. White died. The case will soon be tried before this Court, and would like to have this information for the purpose of framing the charge and specifications…" and signed "James Simons, 1st. Lieut. Arty Actg. Judge Advocate", Very Fine, an interesting letter concerning the murder of Major William P. White.

1530     WD-OD-13 imageConfederacy, Confederate States of America, Ordnance Department, Fayetteville Arsenal and Armory. Semi-official imprint on homemade brown cover hand delivered to "Mr. Carmichael, Present"; docketed "July 12, 1862" with enclosure headed "Fayetteville July 2 1862" from J.G. Shepherd to Major P. Mallett stating "Mr. Archibald Carmichael of this country has a contract to supply lumber to the Confederate States at the Arsenal here-which is not yet fulfilled. It is a large contract and important to the Government. Is he exempt? Be pleased to answer me in 'yes or no' by the next mail.", on the bottom in a different hand is "He is exempt- Your Obt. St-Major Peter Mallett, Maj. AA Genl P.C.A.", also a pencil notation on the verso regarding the specific job and signed by (Capt) William Bell (Builder)., Very Fine, The only recorded example of this imprint and the CSA listing example.

This was obviously sent to Carmichael so he would have proof of his exempt status. Mallett was born in NC, enlisted and was commissioned a Capt. 5-16-61 in Co. C NC 3rd Infantry. He was promoted to Major 5-23-62 and Asst. Adj Gen to serve as Commandant of Conscript.

As a result of an Act passed by the South Carolina Legislature on Dec. 17th 1860, the State of South Carolina took over the United States Arsenal in Charleston, thus acquiring a substantial quantity of Arms and Ammunition that became available to the Confederacy.

Large imprint on handcarried cover to congressman Clark at thr House of Representatives in Richmond, Va., with notation "Mr. Welsh please deliver to Mr. Clark", Very Fine, believed to be the Only Known Imprint of This Type, with 1972 C.S.A. certificate.

On February 20, 1862 Representative Curry of the Confederate Congress' Rules Committee suggested that a committee on Post Offices and Post Roads be established. Subsequently, on the 25th of February it was announced that nine Congressman would comprise the newly formed committee. Two of these members were W.W. Clark of Georgia and Israel Welsh of Mississippi.
