An interesting assembly made up of nine items, including three franked covers, of which one registered, and one stampless postcard bearing "Battag. Italiano in Cina/Tientsin" cds; cover with Chinese franking sent by a member of the Battalion; two incoming envelopes from Italy with franking missing and one carried via Macau and Hong Kong with transits on reverse; illustrated postcard of the "San Marco" Battalion and letter dated 30.7.28 with short text regarding operations in China, F.-V.F., three items are signed by Bottacchi.

1826       imageItalian Offices in China, 1937-38 Savoia Grenadiers in China. Two covers; one with emblem of the Battalion and "Battaglione Granatieri di Savoia in E.O." on the back flap, carried through the Chinese civil mail from Shangai
via Siberia, and very interesting illustrated Christmas card of the Battalion signed by its commander Col. Enrico Andreini inside an envelope with China-Italy mixed franking posted at Naples and sent to Rome, struck on reverse with blue "Battaglione Granatieri di Savoia/Sciangai" double circle with Arms, Very Fine, very unusual duo.

"Shanghai" cds, alongside with transit via Shanghai, large 1899 cover bearing Hong Kong 10c pair and single tied by small "Shanghai" British P.O. cds, and postcard with single Hong Kong 4c, French Post Office with 1901 newspaper wrapper to Rome franked by "Coiling Dragon" 2c tied by bilingual "Tientsin" cds, in combination with France "Chine" 5c tied by French Shanghai cds, 1901 postcard datelined in Peking and sent to Trieste (then in Austria), bearing "Coiling Dragon" 2c pair tied by "Tientsin" bilingual cds, in combination with France "Chine" 10c tied by "Shang-Hai/Chine" cds, 1901 cover (part of the upper back flap missing) from Peking, initially sent to Lengyel in Hungary and redirected to Estaing (France), bearing "Coiling Dragon" 2c and 4c pair, both with sheet margin, tied by bilingual oval dispatch datestamp, and France "Chine " 25c tied by "Shang-Hai/Chine" cds, 1901 picture postcard (couple of wrinkles at left) of Chinese troops at Peking, from Peking to La Spezia, bearing "Coiling Dragon" 4c tied by neat bilingual oval datestamp, in mixed franking with France "Chine" 10c cancelled by "ShangHai/Chine" cds, with Chinese Shanghai and arrival datestamps alongside, also an additional postcard to Milan franked by French China 10c tied at Tientsin, German Post Office with 1900-1903 three postcards to Italy, one being very scarce as sent during the Boxer Rebellion from Peking (29.12.1900) bearing overprinted 10pf, the second originating from Shanghai franked by 1901-04 10pf, and Kiautschou 5pf on postcard from Tsingtau, Japanese Post Office with 1901 "Battery at Shanhaikwan" picture postcard from Peking to Vercelli, franked by Japanese P.O. overprinted 1s single tied by "Shanghai/I.J.P.O." cds, interesting contents regarding the Shanhaikwan-Peking railway communications of the Allies, a very scarce Italian correspondence through the Japanese P.O. during the Boxer Rebellion in a territory taken by few hundreds, Russian Post Offices with 1903-11 four items, of which three bearing Hankow cds', including one incoming postcard, all sent by civilian or commercial entities, as well as very rare 1903 postcard most probably sent by an Italian soldier from "Shan Hai Kuan", with Field P.O. number 3 cds, generally Very Fine.

An extraordinary assembly mainly featuring outstanding varieties of the 1917 first surcharges, comprising four local registered covers including one bearing inverted 4c. on 10c. and 2c. on 5c. pair with double surcharge (one inverted) at top (Oliva and Fiecchi certificates); 4c & 6c two surcharges on 25c (two covers, one accompanied by Fiecchi certificate); and "Floreale" 20c on 40c The lot is additionally enriched by eight used adhesives also of great interest, accompanied by four Fiecchi and Oliva certificates, including surcharges unlisted in Sassone, such as Express 25c only showing "Pechino" overprint (cert. Fiecchi, probably the only recorded), Very Fine, a unique and most difficult group of great rarity and fascination, ex-Marquess of Bute.
