1355       imageSan Diego (Exposition Sta.) Cal., Jul. 26, 1915, Registered. Beautifully struck violet double circle postmark (Bomar SD16-02) on Post Office Dept. Penalty Envelope with rare unlisted violet straight line "Exposition Station, San Diego, Cal." handstamp, cover endorsed in address panel "Compliments of Exposition Station", Extremely Fine, a rare cover which is used in 1915 and is the only known example of this combination of markings, ex-Mader.
Estimate; $1,000 - 1,500.

This is the uniquely listed on cover example of this exposition postmark with two other strikes noted on facing slips. This cover realized $3,750 hammer in our 2009 Westpex sale.

THE FINEST RECORDED STRIKE OF THIS BROOKLYN FANCY PATRIOTIC CANCEL.

The Skinner Eno tracing for this cancel is not as sharp as the strike here, which clearly shows an additional star at the top of the shield. This cancel is known used at two towns: Brooklyn N.Y. and South Norwalk Ct.

The USS "Sebago" was a large (832 long tons) steamer with very powerful guns and four howitzers. With her large crew of 156 sailors, she served the Union Navy during the blockade of ports and waterways of the Confederate States of America as a gunboat.
