Straightline postmark and red manuscript "25" cent rating on 1805 folded letter to Washington Pa., letter datelined "Bayou Sarah, Nov 3rd 1805" (Spanish West Florida) from David Bradford, a prominent leader of the Pennsylvania Whiskey Rebellion of 1794, to prominent statesman David Redick, letter refers to traveler going through Kentucky, Very Fine.
Estimate; $600 - 800.

The 1794 rebellion was subdued by forces sent by President George Washington with Bradford escaping to Spanish West Florida.

1177       image(Forts) (Fort Buchanan, Arizona) 1860 (c., Jun. 28) New York N.Y. to Fort Buchanan, Arizona. Cover endorsed "Overland Mail Via St. Louis" bearing three 3¢ dull red (26) singles, minor nicks, tied by two strikes of "New-York Jun 28" cds; refolded at top and reduced at left, Very Fine and attractive use.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

Fort Buchanan existed for only five years 1856 to 1861 and was part of New Mexico Territory as Arizona was not a separate territory until February 24, 1863. It was under constant threat from Apaches. This cover was carried along the Butterfield Overland Mail route from St. Louis to Arizona.

Fort Snelling was at various times part of Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa Territories, from Dec. 28, 1846, to Mar. 2, 1849, it was considered part of the unorganized territory in the Louisiana Purchase region (Second Period, listed in ASCC under Minnesota).

Fort Wilkinson was named for General James Wilkinson located on Oconee River four miles south of Milledgeville site of negotiation of June 1802 land treaty with Creeks. Fort Sutler's letter.

1184       image(Forts) Fort Wingate N. Mex., Sep 4 1882. Complete strike of cds and circled star cancel on 3¢ green entire to Chicago Ill., original enclosure datelined "Fort Wingate N.M. Sept 4th '82" reading in part: "…Since writing last nothing has occurred. I stay in camp all day… Tomorrow morning 5 of the party stand for the Indian town to stay two month. Judging from the descriptions I hear in camp of the dirt, lice & filth of these towns. I have no desire to spend any length of time in them…Mr. Stevenson who came from Washington on Saturday is going to take a party to the San Juan county (south west of him)…"; reduced slightly at left, otherwise Very Fine and scarce Territorial Fort use.
