The site of Fort Collins was originally an encampment for Mormon emigrants. The fort, called Camp Collins, was built in 1864 and abandoned in 1871.

Double struck black cds on Patriotic Cover with Flag and Sunrise design with "Protect It" sentiment to Massachusetts bearing 3¢ rose (65) cancelled by target; minor stains and small reduction at right, Very Fine and rare patriotic use from Colorado Territory, ex-Persson.

Fort Lyon was named after Nathaniel Lyon, the first Union General killed in the Civil War. It was located on the north bank of the Arkansas River just west of Bent's New Fort. The Post Office was establish at the fort in 1862, later in 1866 the river began to shift toward the fort and a new site was selected twenty miles upstream and occupied as Fort Lyon in June of 1867.

During the territorial period alone, the Julesburgh post office opened no less than six times. The first was May 29, 1860, while still Nebraska Territory, closing in September 1862. At this time it was a station on the Overland Trail and Pony Express routes. It reopened January 20, 1864, the town of Julesburgh was completely destroyed by Indians in 1865, and the sporadically operating office was renamed Fort Sedgwick May 3, 1866.

1007       imageRosita Colorado Apr 18 1876. Magenta boxed five-line postmark on cover to Mission Creek, Kansas bearing 3¢ green (158) tied by unusual segmented bar cancel; reduced at right and some overall soiling, still F.-V.F., Rosita is the only Colorado town known to have used this type of postmark during the territorial period, and pre-statehood examples are very scarce. Illustrated in Jarrett's Colorado book.

James Gadsden to Andrew Jackson, President U.S., Washington, the Autographed Letter Signed James Gadsden addressed "Dear General" and datelined "Wasiapa 1 June 1830" relative to appointment of Cadet Gadsden, flap with President Jackson's notation "Letter from Col. James Gadsden of Florida, Referred to the Navy Department"; reinforced fold splitting sealing letter closed, clean and Very Fine, ex-Meroni.

AN EXCEPTIONAL HISTORICAL LETTER FROM JAMES GADSDEN TO PRESIDENT ANDREW JACKSON. ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE RIMLESS LIPONA POST MARK.

Lipona was located 10 miles from Tallahassee on the mail route to Micanopy and was the site of a 10,000 acre plantation of Prince Achille Murate, exiled son of the King of Naples and a nephew of Napoleon Boneparte. Murat became known as Col. Murat after his marriage to a daughter of Virginian Col. B. Willis. Lipona is an anagram of Naples. The post office was established May 8th 1828 and operated until December 16, 1847.

The large "PAID" is not recorded for Magnolia and may have, in fact, been applied by the sender, Mr. Read.
